Carlton -- Thought provoking, as always. This is also evocative of some of Hogarth's morality sketches.

Dear M. Hobbs,

I hope that you are well and busy. I was looking at your page on A.-C. Boulle: the portrait (fig 1) is not of Boulle but of Henri Van Soest (1659-1726). It is self portrait, made in Boulle marquetry and exhibited at the Musee des arts Decoratifs in Paris. For years, it was said to be representing Boulle but the cabinet represented in the background is a cabinet made by Soest....
Sorry.

regards,

Happy christmas,

yannick

Thanks for the info and opinions, Tricia! Just read that the hat was given to Walpole by the Countess of Albemarle. There's no photo, but you can read more about its provenance here.

I made it over to the Yale British Art Museum's exhibition on Strawberry Hill. It's a good show-- didn't have as much furniture as I expected, but it did have some very interesting depictions of the interiors of Strawberry Hill, made by Walpole's contemporaries. And it had Cardinal Wolsey's hat, which Walpole apparently inherited. Very exciting!
